What should I do if my water heater is leaking from the top?

Shut off power or gas, close the cold-water valve on top, and schedule service. A top leak often points to inlet/outlet fittings or a relief connection and needs a licensed plumber. We repair and replace gas, electric, hybrid heat pump, and tankless water heaters, and we’re available 24/7 in Portland and Vancouver.

Quick steps:

  • Electric: turn off the breaker.
  • Gas: set the gas control to off.
  • Close the cold-water shutoff on top.
  • Gently dry the area and note where drips start.
